CAMPUS

HOOGVLIET- a satellite town of Rotterdam, is undergoing massive urban renewal. Campus Hoogvliet is an urban vision for the restructuring of the neighbourhood Meewenplaat. The plan seeks to incorporates three schools, a library, a sports club, cultural centre and houses.

Campus Hoogvliet investigates different spatial configurations for possible mixes of all of these elements, with the objective to maintain the individual identities of the schools whilst generating a condition in which all the players benefit from each other.

Each of the schools is coupled to one of the ancillary functions resulting in a school/sports club, a school/cultural centre and a school/library. These neighbourhood functions have separate entrances and operate independently whilst lending a positive identity to the school. A symbiotic relationship occurs.

Instead of demolishing the existing housing blocks, as is the general practice in these suburbs, we propose to reuse the buildings in casco form.

Steel framed portal structures are placed over the existing buildings providing the possibility to increase the surface area of flats as well as to generate highly needed outdoor space. Large bridge-like structures are used to link existing blocks in the case of the school buildings.
